Literal Urban "Jungle"?

This morning we will be featuring some green buildings that is either proposed or under construction in Singapore.

Our fellow admin Van has been going on and on about green buildings and green buildings for the past few weeks and we decided we should finally do up one post dedicated to eco-friendly buildings here in Singapore. I hope she'll stop bugging us now.

Anyway,
Surprised? Bet you didn't know Singapore is going all out to be environmentally friendly. Turns out Singapore has big dreams to be the "eco-hub" in all of South East Asia, similar to its other dreams like to be a sports-hub, fashion-hub or design-hub.

But unlike the other hubs, being an eco-hub is probably the most sensible among all her other fantasies. But it

So without ado,

Presenting: The eco-buildings of Singapore

City Square Mall

City Square Mall is the first eco-friendly mall in Singapore. It is one of the first few buildings in Singapore to implement alternative sources of energy and clever building design to reduce their carbon footprint.

Some of the malls environmentally-friendly features include
- Extended solar fins and louvres to tap on solar energy
- Specially designed roof to allow natural light to pass through.
- Light sensors on the roof to regulate interior lighting,

Basically they have loads of light sensors implemented everywhere to reduce the use energy. Combined with the features mentioned above, City Square malls seems to have nailed it in energy conservation.

Khoo Teck Puat Hospital

Khoo Teck Puat Hospital is Singapore's other green building which is worth mentioning. It features a cleverly designed ventilation system which allows the hospital to utilize minimal use of air conditioning.

Apart from that, the hospital also utilizes solar panels to heat up water to be used by the hospital.

And to top it off, the hospital is surrounded by gardens. There is even on on the roof!

EDITT Building

This is where the fun starts.

Although the EDITT builiding is still pending construction, when it is built, it will be the most energy-effecient, most eco-friendly building among all eco-friendly building in Singapore. Put it simply, the EDITT building will make the other two buildings mentioned here look like a carbon emitting factory.

The EDITT building was designed back in 1998 by TR Hamzah & Yeang, but is only getting recognition recently. Now plans are being brought forth to make this building a really.

The building is essentially just a residential apartment building with loads of green sprinkled all over it. The eco-friendly features are more efficient beats the other two buildings hands down!

The features include,
- Solar Panels which will provide 40% of the building energy needs.
- A passive architectural design to allow natural air flow and ventilation throughout the building
- A biogas production plant that will convert sewage into biogas to be used as fuel for the building.
- A centralized recycling facility for each storey in the building.

The building will also be made up of recycled materials where necessary. It can't totally be built out of 100% natual materials can it, it wouldn't be safe at all.

How was that for a green building? Told you it would be great.

We would like to also tell you about Gardens by the Bay which is located at Marina Bay Sands. It is a large garden by the sea, boasting many flowers and plantation. It is supposed to promote the love for our home and I dare say that it is doing a good job.

Unfortunately it is not officially opened yet and will only do so in June 2012.

Five Unique Ways You Can Save The Environment

Good morning everyone! This Sunday we’ll be bringing you five interesting, exciting and kinky ways you can save the environment! Every method presented here in this blogpost was thought up solely by us and all the illustrations you will see is done by none other than our very own admin Zaitsev! (He’s single and available!)

This Sunday’s blog post was supposed to be scheduled for our midweek blog post, but due to us being busy in many many many projects, we had to delay the blog post. So sorry if we made any of you guys wait!

Without further ado, Marketing for GAIA presents:

FIVE UNBELIEVABLE METHODS YOU CAN DO TO SAVE GAIA

Method #1

Share your belongings!

And of course by “belongings” we don’t mean your undergarments. We are pretty sure some of you will be thinking of that. The kinky part will only come in Method #4, so chill, we’ll get there!

Sharing stationery or tools is a good way to save the environment and your hard earned cash. Think about it, how much resources will be saved by just sharing something with your pal. Imagine because of you guys just sharing a pencil, a tree in the Amazon was saved from a woodcutters ax! Or let’s say you need to use a hammer. Just walk over to your neighbour’s house, and ask to borrow a hammer. Make sure you say please! And hey presto! Saved 60 bucks!

Oh and please, be willing to share your OWN belongings too!

Method #2

Have a no shower week!

Please, only do this when you know you aren’t meeting any human beings for a week! So we recommend only doing this during holidays. For the working adults, how about a week’s leave to save the environment? It’s worth it!

I’m sure everyone is intelligent enough to know the reason behind this method. Just in case you don’t, it’s all about saving water. Imagine how much water you can save. Okay lets say you usually bathe twice a day, and each time you bathe you use up 25 litres of water. That’s 350 litres of liquid saved! You can also make that energy bill go down a little for that month.

Method #3

Have a waste bin, AND a recycling bin at home

“We heard that one already” Yeah we know you have, but there’s a catch!

Implement a scoring system! Here’s the proposed game plan:

-Create scoreboards for each bin.

- For every object thrown into the recycling bin, award the recycling side one point.

- For every object thrown into the waste bin, award the waste side one point.

- At the end of each week, calculate the scores.

- Reward yourself if recycling side has more point. Give yourself a chocolate bar or something.

As you may know, the whole point of this is to encourage recycling in your very own home. Give it a try, it could be fun for the whole family!

Method #4

Take a bath with your partner/spouse, hehe!

Here you go, the long awaited kinky part!

We recommend doing this only when you’re grown up and married? Some mature themes here.

How will this save the environment? Well, if you think about it, you will be using one person’s worth of bath water (25 litres!) for two people. And what better way to kick off that dreary Monday morning with a hot, steamy bath eh? Eh? You’ll improve your relationship with your loved one and won’t be late for work ever again! Actually, you might be even later for work if you know what I mean eh?

Method #5

Plant a tree!

Okay guys, kinky part’s over. Getting down to more serious business here! Every single day we will use up some form of product that is made up of trees. Of course the most common one being paper. What better way to repay all the paper you used up by presenting the world with a new tree!

And it’s not just paper, the doors to your home were trees. The pencils you use were once trees. Even the coffee table I’m typing this on is made up of a tree that used to stand tall in Indonesia. It tears us to think about the lives we have taken away. ‘Lives’ in plural because each tree is a habitat, a home to thousands of creatures. Each time we print out our reports, a squirrel loses its home, or a bird will lose it’s nest with their young in it.

Let’s create new homes for all these displaced animals. Here in Singapore, you can give back to the environment by donating to the Plant a Tree campaign. The website shown below tells you how you can participate.

http://www.gardencityfund.org/pat/How_to_take_part.htm

For every $200 dollars donated, a tree will be planted. Also, all proceeds from our upcoming campaign will be used to fund the planting of new trees. So you have to stay tuned! Our campaign will be coming REALLY REALLY SOON!

We hope everyone enjoyed this blogpost! The admins at Marketing for GAIA did a considerable amount of research and discussion to make this post happen. Also We would like to thank admin Zaitsev for all the illustrations.

Thank you and stay tuned for more!

Mindblowing facts you dont know about global warming

Firstly, i would like to apologise on behalf of my team with regards to crediting issues. We were too excited to share the images so apart from quoting the artiste we didn't look more into it as a graphic being used by a movie and we're sorry about it ;'( . Well, we've done some research to make up for it and there you go! For saving the world..... dont stop visiting us! *teardrops on my guitar* :

So just to share, Cloverfield is a 2008 American disaster-monster film directed by Matt Reeves. But.. it has nothing to do with global warming so it ends here. Hehe

Are you ready?! just asking.

Do you know .. (Bet you dont)

#1 You can actually play a part by eating less meat?
We all love meat. Who doesn't, but if we're able to do a part by eating less meat, will you? Give us 6 minutes of your time and do watch this video by Project " Don't eat the planet" Enjoy.

Don't Eat the Planet: http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=32068839545

#2 SMALL POX MAY RE-EMERGE?

Deadly diseases like smallpox could resurface as permafrost melts. This layer of permanently frozen soil beneath the ground’s surface is thawing. Not only could this destroy buildings and railroad tracks, but as the ground thaws, corpses buried long ago could get discovered and end up being infectious. Dont play play.

Would love to share images but... it'd be rather unpleasant. Think pimples and blisters all over your body... MINDBLOWN http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smallpox (click at your own risk)

#3 70 million tons of Carbon Dioxide is being released EVERY SINGLE DAY.

That’s equivalent to 1.4 billion pounds – yesterday, today, tomorrow, and every single day. How much exactly is 1.4 billion pounds, according to google its... 635 029 318 kilograms. Now that is gross.

#4 Hundreds of million people will inevitably be displaced

As more and more freshwater melts into the sea, this could greatly disrupt the ocean’s vital currents. Ironically, even bring a mini-Ice Age to Europe. Remember how we used to play police and thief and we "freeze" each other, yeah freeze, now we're gonna be all frozen; literally. Think CoCo Chanel and Louis Vuitton outlets looking like fridges. What the heck?

#5 Drowned Cities, not only Venice.

Cant get enough of underwater world? No need for our further generations to visit Sentosa or any other attractions no more. Maldives, London, New York and many other metropolitan cities will eventually be underwater. Well.. not quite a bad news in fact a dream come true for businessmen trying to build underwater hotels.

Ultimate MIND... wait for it... BLOWN FACT:

While 1+1=2, America + India = China
And what do i mean by that? We all know that China has the biggest population in the world. China as home of the record holder who practically inserted 1200 needles into his head for god knows what reasons (okay sidetrack); With a new addition to their hundreds of titles ...

*drumrolls*
Crowned World's highest percentage of Carbon Dioxide Emission:
China
(with a capital C)
C for Champion lor.
Emitting 7711 million tonnes of Carbon Dioxide annually. Which is equivalent to 13.3% of world's carbon dioxide emission to the atmosphere every year (as of 2009).

What else can i say .. Okay its time to say goodbye. But STAY TUNED. Sick and tired of reading effects of global warming on the world (everywhere apart from our little red dot Singapore) ? Also, we'll talk ALL about the effects of global warming on Singapore and how it'll directly affect us all in the coming blogposts. Are you ready to see how we all gonna suffer? Oh and we'll teach you how to go green and easy at home! Like our fanpage and we'll be back ..

What will our home become?

Have you ever wondered?
How would it be like in a hundred years time?
What are we gonna face if we dont do something to stop global warming?
An artist's view of the effects of global warming in graphics. Enjoy

Global warming has been causing a dramatic rise in sea level, melting the ice bergs, major floods all across various cities such as Japan's and Bangkok. Will we all end up in environments like this?

What do you think? How about ... swimming to school? Well don't think we fancy the idea of swimming with cows and walking our pet polar bears by the beach.

Our home in flames

Have you realised how humid it is lately? Its global warming.

Well thousands have protested against global warming but... dont think they have actually done anything to help did they.

Starting this green blog movement, we're here to save the day! Learn factss you never knew, and the many ways you can do in your daily lives to reduce the pace of global warming. Now watch this, it's time to get serious >;]. A short introductory to what our blog is all about. Enjoy

Above is a video we would like to share. Exactly how much do we actually know about global warming apart from rising temperatures and air pollution that are broadly discussed in school. There are so many areas we need to look into and if we dont start doing our part, our already depleting earth would be gone; its just the matter of time.Within the last 100 years, Earth’s average surface temperature increased by about 0.8 °C (1.4 °F) with about two thirds of the increase occurring over just the last three decades. Warming of the climate system is unequivocal, and scientists are more than 90% certain most of it is caused by increasing concentrations of greenhouse gases produced by human activities such as deforestation.

Time is running out, we should start doing something about it shouldnt we?

#FACTONE: Do you know you play a part just by using lesser hot water?
1) Buy low-flow showerheads to save hot water and about 350 pounds of carbon dioxide yearly.
2) Wash your clothes in warm or cold water to reduce your use of hot water and the energy required to produce it. That change alone can save at least 500 pounds of carbon dioxide annually in most households.
3) Use the energy-saving settings on your dishwasher and let the dishes air-dry.
